Riot Platforms partners with Anthropic to develop AI-focused mining infrastructure
Riot Platforms, a major U.S. Bitcoin mining company, announced a strategic agreement with Anthropic, an artificial‑intelligence startup backed by Google. Under the deal, Riot will allocate a portion of its mining capacity to run Anthropic’s large language models, effectively converting some of its hash‑rate into AI compute power. The collaboration will be managed through a joint venture that will share the costs of hardware, electricity and data‑center operations, while allowing Anthropic to tap into Riot’s low‑cost, renewable‑energy‑rich facilities.
The partnership reflects a broader shift among cryptocurrency miners who are repurposing excess electricity and hardware for AI workloads as demand for generative‑AI services rises. Riot’s move follows similar initiatives by other mining firms that have begun offering “flexible compute” services to AI developers, seeking to diversify revenue streams beyond Bitcoin mining.
Both companies said the arrangement will not affect Riot’s existing Bitcoin production, and the AI compute capacity will be allocated on a separate, dedicated portion of its infrastructure. Anthropic will gain access to scalable, low‑price compute resources, while Riot expects to generate additional income from the growing AI market.
Industry analysts note that the convergence of crypto mining and AI computing could reshape the energy consumption profile of both sectors. By leveraging existing mining facilities for AI tasks, firms aim to improve asset utilization and mitigate the environmental concerns associated with high‑energy data centers.
